In 2007, when I signed on to become an Auxiliary Volunteer with Monongahela Valley Hospital, I never imagined where my journey would take me or, how I might touch peoples’ lives.
From sharing the grief and pain of a mother who had lost her son, to having a Grandmother, who is raising her grandchildren, cry and hug me after I comforted her, my volunteer work is more rewarding than words can describe. The satisfaction of knowing that family members and visitors can approach me for assistance or if they need to talk with someone makes my being there so worthwhile.
Since becoming a member of the Auxiliary, I have worked many of the services and held the position of Vice President, President, and I’m the current Past President. I also assist the Ways and Means Committee with the planning of and working the events and fundraisers. This gives me the opportunity to interact with the community, explain our group’s purpose, and answer any questions they might have.
I also serve on the Patient Family Advisory Council Committee. This newly developed program uses volunteers in many ways, from helping to comfort patients and visitors in the Emergency Department, to providing support to family members of loved ones that are nearing end of life.
The highlight of my journey has been being appointed to the MVH Foundation Board in 2019. I have had the pleasure of meeting and working with so many amazing people. Becoming an advocate for the Hospital Foundation, working with the community and sharing our goals, has become such an important part of my life.
In all of these volunteer positions, I have the opportunity to provide care when people are at their most vulnerable moments. Our health is the most important thing we can have in life. Having a positive impact on our community members when they are in the care of MVH is a special privilege that I take to heart. It is my honor to be an ambassador and volunteer for our wonderful Monongahela Valley Hospital.
