How do you say Thank You to the anonymous donor, the donor you don't know, and for the donation when you can't find the correct words?
Before February 14, 2009, a Thank You was a thank you. After March 16, 2009, a Thank You caused a lump in your throat, a tear in your eye, or not having to look to see if your check would bounce.
On February 14th, we found out Olivia was sick. Olivia knew she was sick before February 14th, but she had no idea how sick she was. On March 11th, we heard the word cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma). On March 16th, we heard the word terminal.
Over the next three and a half months, our needs were both financial and emotional. Our first purchase was a laptop so Olivia could keep in touch with her friends. After that we bought recliners, so Olivia could be comfortable after they had to put in drainage tubes for her lungs. Gas, parking, and fast food were blurs in our lives at the time. Our bigger needs were emotional. Penguin games and the prom were huge distractions that allowed us some normalcy. Having Sid and Max call, putting that huge smile on Olivia's face, is something words can't explain.
Friends and family helped form the Foundation to say Thank You to those who supported the family. So now, we say Thank You by giving a donation to youth in life threatening or life altering situations. We say Thank You by sponsoring scholarships and helping classroom situations. We say Thank You by honoring a young girl who made me a better person.
Thank You.
