At his annual physical, 68-year-old Francis had a wake-up call. His weight was so high that the scale could not provide a reading. He was off the charts.

In that moment, Francis knew that he needed a game plan if he wanted to save his life.

Already, he had experienced health problems including a triple heart bypass and lymphedema. It was likely his weight contributed to both.

Francis knew changing his lifestyle would be very hard work, but he was willing to try. With guidance from his doctors, Francis adopted a reduced calorie diet (approximately 1,300 to 1,500 calories) and decided to drink more water. He also started a fitness routine at home using a 25-pound kettle ball.

Support from his family was also important. One day, Francis’ nephew suggested that he consider exercising at the Mon Valley YMCA. His nephew also mentioned that he should review the details of his supplemental health plan – it was possible Francis might quality for a free membership!

In was not long before Francis was the YMCA’s newest member. His workout routine consisted of circuit training three or four times a week.

The progress Francis has made has been incredible! Since he began his journey three years ago, he has lost a total of 113 pounds (or ninepants sizes)! He gives a lot of credit to Peggy Herforth and Marine Martin, fitness trainers at the Y, for their encouragement.

Francis has hit his goal weight of 250 pound and he's not done yet. He plans to continue his new healthy lifestyle of exercising and eating right.
